Do I have to take theory test

This text describes the situation for all candidates who would like to pass their driving examination and obtain their driving licence. You must be 17 years of age to take the theory test - of course, you can start studying for the test before you are 17 because nothing can prevent you from knowing all important driving rules, if you only want to. The theory test is designed to test your knowledge of the highway code. You can book the theory test before you are 17 - but you won be allowed to take the theory test until after your 17th birthday. You have to remember that you need a provisional licence to book the Theory Test. From April 2003 an amendment to the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1996 means that all candidates will have to pass the relevant theory test before they can take their practical test. You will also need to take a theory test if you want a licence for a new category of vehicle, for example, if you have a car licence and you want a motorcycle licence you will need to take a theory test. If, however, you want to upgrade within a vehicle category you will not normally need to take a theory test, for example, if you have a full automatic car licence and you want a manual car licence you will not have to take a theory test.
